Description

This Repertory Studio class offers advanced teen performers ages 13–18 the opportunity to deepen their musical theater training through challenging music, scenes, and character work from The Outsiders. Designed for serious performers, the class focuses on developing the skills needed to approach complex material with confidence, intention, and emotional authenticity.

Throughout the session, students will work with selected songs and scenes from The Outsiders, exploring character relationships, storytelling, vocal performance, scene work, and ensemble connection. Students will be challenged to make thoughtful artistic choices while strengthening their ability to communicate character and story through both acting and music.

Students will focus on:
  • Advanced musical theater vocal technique and performance
  • Character development and emotional connection to material
  • Scene study, partner work, and ensemble storytelling
  • Text and lyric analysis, objectives, relationships, and subtext
  • Making specific, grounded acting choices within musical theater material
  • Developing stage presence, confidence, and performance maturity
  • Refining the ability to connect acting, singing, and storytelling into a cohesive performance
Baseline Assessment:
After registration, students will be contacted and asked to submit a video recording of a monologue. This submission will serve as baseline data to help the instructor understand each student's current skill level, identify areas for growth, and tailor instruction throughout the session.

Repertory Studio is designed for students who are ready to be challenged, receive detailed feedback, and take greater ownership of their development as performers.

THE DURATION OF THIS COURSE IS ONLY FOR THE 9 WEEK SESSION.
Prerequisite: To enroll in a Repertory Studio class, students must have successfully completed Intro to Musical Theater and participated in at least three Main Stage productions.

Derrick Millard

Derrick Lionel Millard II, graduated from Temple University with a BA in Theatre with a concentration in acting. He most recently performed in Theatre Horizon’s Philadelphia Regional Premiere of THE COLOR PURPLE, appearing as the PREACHER, BUSTER, GRADY, AND BOBBY amongst other ensemble roles which won a Barrymore Award for best ensemble. He has also been privileged to perform in several Philadelphia regional productions including “Death of a Salesman: at EgoPo Classic theatre, Moses: A Musical Retelling at John Graves Productions, and How to Kill A Child And A Demon by Donja R. Love. He is the founder of Dream L.ive Movement, a performing arts company that creates theatrical discourse on biblical and societal topics. His company’s productions include “The Visionary’s Journal”, “The Affirmation of Love” and The Fabric From Which We’ve Come. From 2016-2020 he was the Artistic Production Director at Spirit Of Faith Christian Center creating productions for more than 5,000 weekly attendees. Now he is the Creative/Worship Director for Lift City Church in Lafayette, Louisiana.
