The Little Mermaid Character Descriptions
Ariel
The heroine of our story is a little mermaid who longs to be human. Ariel has beautiful singing solos, but she must be able to convey meaning through gesture once she loses her voice. She should be a strong singer, dancer, actress, and a very dynamic performer.
Prince Eric
Eric is an adventurous prince who captures Ariel’s heart. He should be a charming performer with a sensitive nature. He should also be a strong singer, dancer, and actor.
Ursula
Ursula is the manipulative sea witch who tries to overthrow King Triton. She is cunning and devious and will stop at nothing to get what she wants. This roll calls for a mature performer who can bring out this villain’s humor while finding texture in Ursula’s complexity. She should be a very strong singer and actress.
Sebastian
Sebastian is the meticulous and anxious crab who tries to keep Ariel safe while getting to lead some of the most memorable songs in the show! This actor needs to be able to handle Sebastian’s emotional and vocal range. He should be a very strong singer, dancer, and actor.
Flounder
Flounder is Ariel’s sincere and sensitive best friend who is loyal to the end. This spunky fish also has a show-stopping solo in “She’s in Love”. Flounder can be cast as a girl or a boy with an unchanged voice. He or she should be a strong singer, dancer, and actor.
King Triton
King Triton rules the sea and is a force to be reckoned with. This non-singer needs to command the stage as a strong leader but also show the tenderness of a parent. He should be a strong actor.
Scuttle
Scuttle is the know-it-all seagull who serves as Ariel’s expert on humans. This character is funny and off-beat. He or she should be a performer with good comedic timing who is willing to have fun with Scuttle’s eccentricities. He or she should be a strong singer, dancer, and comedic actor.
Flotsam and Jetsam
Flotsam and Jetsam are Ursula’s slippery spies. These electric eels are sinister and sneaky, so the performers should be under-handed and devious while still being heard on stage. They should be strong actors and dancers.
Chef Louis
Chef Louis is the over-the-top head chef in the palace. He or she is always wild and frenetic and should be a great comedic actor. He or she should be a strong singer and able to do a French accent.
Pilot
The pilot is the head sailor on Prince Eric’s ship. This nautical expert entertains the sailors with wild tales of the sea. He should be a strong singer.
Grimsby
Grimsby is Prince Eric’s prim and proper valet. He is rigid in personality and constantly trying to guide Prince Eric towards the throne. He should be a strong actor.
Carlotta
Carlotta is the headmistress in Prince Eric’s palace and Ariel’s greatest human ally. She needs to be warm and maternal to make Ariel feel welcome. She should be a strong actress.
Gull 1, 2, and 3
These three Gulls are Scuttle’s flock of zany “back-up singers” who help explain human stuff to Ariel. They should be strong actors, dancers, and singers with good comedic timing.
Aquata, Andrina, Arista, Atina, Adella, and Allana
The mersisters are Ariel’s siblings and full of personality and sass. These girls should be able to create and play six distinctive characters. They should be strong singers and dancers.
Princesses
The six princesses try everything they can to win the heart of Prince Eric. None of them posses the voice Eric is searching for, but they should have a lot of exaggeration and comedic timing to show off for him. They should be strong singers.
Seahorse
The seahorse is the court herald for King Triton. He or she should have a strong speaking voice.
Named Fish and Chefs
These eight performers will be responsible for some singing solos in Under the Sea and Les Poissons. They should be strong singers.
Chef/Swan/Fish Dancers
These performers will lead the dances, as well as have dance solos in Under the Sea, Les Poissons, and Kiss the Girl. They should be very strong dancers.
Sailors
The sailors are the crew of Prince Eric’s ship. They are eager for adventure and ready to tackle a storm. They should be able to sing.
Sea Creatures/Lagoon Animals
The Sea Creatures are the underwater animals in King Triton’s court. They should be able to sing and dance.
Chefs
These chefs are Chef Louis’ assistants. They should be able to sing and dance.
Gulls
The gulls are quirky birds that love explaining human stuff to Ariel. They should be able to sing and dance.
Note: To audition you must be ages 8 to 18 and registered for CYT spring classes. If you are cast additional rehearsals are required on Friday nights and Saturday's in addition to the Tuesday evening classes. Class tuition is not refundable once you audition.
