Class Description

In this new class we are offering this spring, students will explore the world of spoken word or performance poetry. We will learn to deliver a poem or song lyrics using the skills of spoken word, which include physical presence, voice and articulation, and dramatic expression. Students are not required to write original poems or lyrics for this class and will have the option of using published works or writing their own pieces. For the showcase, we will us lyrics from and/or inspired by Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen in a creative spoken word mash-up. This class will be taught by Karissa Sorrell who joins us for her first CYT session. Come enjoy this new and challenging class!



Karissa Sorrell

Karissa has a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and is the author of the poetry chapbook Evening Body. Her poems have also been published in a variety of literary journals. In addition, Karissa is an K-12 ESL teacher with 18 years of teaching experience. She is excited to be involved with CYT!
